Metropolis Construction built and installed these custom kitchen cabinets for a remodel of an early 20th century home in the East Isles neighborhood of Minneapolis. They are built of maple and feature inset doors and drawer fronts. The door panel style was copied from vintage cabinets in the dining room. The island was painted a different color to provide contrast with the rest of the cabinetry, and the counterop colors also change to highlight the island. Inside the cabinets are a number of space and time saving pull outs.

This custom kitchen on Lowry Hill required a small addition to expand the footprint. This enabled the construction of an eat-in area and more space for cabinetry and an island, without encroaching on the vintage butlers pantry and oak paneled dining room. The addition features a solid bank of Marvin windows to allow in a lot of light. We custom built the banquette and trestle table. In floor heat and plank style floor tile anchor the custom cabinets and Cambria counter tops. The range hood was custom made by our friends at Van Madrone Metal Works.

St. Paul Condo

St. Paul Condo

This St. Paul condo was quite dated and the quality of the finishes was low.The customer did not have a large budget, but wanted to update and modernize. We tore out the carpet and installed hardwood floors, re did the bathroom and the kitchen. We removed the wall betwen the kitchen and dining room and opened up the floor plan, also creating an eat in kitchen countertop. We installed some big box store cabinets and countertops but did a nice tile backsplash and tile floor to keep the project affordable but still upgrade the living space.

Northeast Kitchen

Northeast Kitchen

This NE Minneapolis house had a dated 60's kitchen and all the original historic details removed. We fixed some structural issues and gutted the kitchen, upgrading all the mechanicals. The trim was replaced to match the homes historic style and new quartersawn oak cabinets installed. Granite countertops are great, but what really makes this kitchen is the hand made tile back splash from North Prairie Tile Works.

This was a creative and exciting project. The homeowners had an arts and crafts style home in the Uptown area with a terrible 80's "do it yourself" kitchen. They wanted a sleek modern kitchen with refined design elements, that also respected the houses historic style. The solution was to remove the wall between dining room and kitchen and remove the wall between the pantry and a mudroom/entry way. This opened up the floor plan and made room for a new patio door centered on a widened pantry.

Bump Out

Bump Outs

This project was a kitchen remodel of a South Minneapolis bungalow. In order to expand the footprint of the kitchen, we removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room and built these two bump outs. Each bump out allowed for expanded cabinet and countertop space and we installed as large a window as would fit in each one. These will be clad in stucco. This is a great solution to a cramped bungalow kitchen.

The Green Bungalow

A view of the completed exterior. The dormers which add so much to the upper floor are barely noticed from the street and finished to match the home. Wood storm windows and storm door replaced aluminum storms and give the house a more traditional look. Refinished vintage front door and vintage fixture along with period paint colors are details which enhance the front of the home.

Here's a good shot of the house before we started the project.

This featured project is my own home. It was purchased and remodeled quite intentionally as a demonstration project for what I feel is a huge area of potential—the Twin Cities “Bungalow belt” of homes from the early 20th century. This was a pilot project for the MN Greenstar program, which achieved a Silver rating fora type III project. A type III project is a remodel that adds living space without expanding the footprint of the home.
